The I need aspirin do-it-yourself method.

Everything I’m going to tell you, you can do yourself to increase client referrals, get better reviews, and get valuable client feedback. We will use the word client in our example but customer applies equally. Beware, this method is not pain free:

  1. Decide what client feedback you want. What questions do you want to ask your client? How? When? Remember, the insights you get from your client feedback are only as good as the quality of the questions you ask.
  2. Create your feedback surveys with whatever tools that best suit you and your clients.
  3. Send out the survey to your clients. Either by mail, email, fax, carrier pigeon, or whatever method you choose.
  4. Wait for them to respond.
  5. If they have not responded send them a reminder. You might have to repeat this step a few times.
  6. Gather their responses and start analyzing them. Analyze them individually and then collectively to find actionable insights. You can use whatever tools that you want.
  7. Start identifying which clients are very satisfied, just satisfied, and unsatisfied with your services.
  8. Think about ways to change very satisfied and unsatisfied clients into very satisfied ones and implement those changes.
  9. Talk to your very satisfied and satisfied clients and ask them for a review. If they provide a review encourage them to share it online on as many places as possible.
  10. If they don’t respond, gently remind them for a review. You may have to repeat this step until they do, without being annoying.
  11. Just like the review, ask very satisfied and satisfied clients to make a referral. Also, ask for the contact information of anyone they know who may need your services. Remember, you may have to repeat this step until they do while avoiding being annoying.
  12. Thank your clients who have provided you with reviews or referrals.
  13. Maintain and organize all feedback that you have been given by your clients.
  14. Maintain a list of very satisfied and satisfied clients and a few times a year ask for a referral or a review through reminders.
  15. Market to prospective clients you gained via your referral request. Market by email, newsletter, social media, direct mail, or whatever method you want.
  16. Maintain and repeat this whole process as part of your regular practice and routine.
